Current Situation:
- Question: Why was a decision on vaccine for children under 5 delayed?
Answer: The ongoing clinical trials showed that two smaller doses of the vaccine in younger children do not create the same immune response as the larger doses used in older children. This evaluation is part of the rigorous review process that all COVID-19 vaccines have undergone before being authorized. After reviewing initial data, the FDA announced it would wait until more data from the ongoing trial is available, which could be in April, to help advisors make a science-based recommendation. - Gov. Gavin Newsom recently unveiled the state’s SMARTER Plan, the next phase of California’s pandemic response. Building on lessons learned over the past two years and the state’s ongoing commitment to equity, the SMARTER Plan will guide California’s strategic approach to managing COVID-19 while moving the state’s recovery forward. Emphasizing continued readiness, awareness and flexibility, the Plan ensures California maintains its focus on disproportionately impacted communities, while staying prepared to respond to emerging COVID-19 variants and changing conditions.
