COVID-19 can cost you more than your health. There can also be a significant financial impact. The free vaccine may cost you 30 minutes of your time, but catching the virus can cost you thousands of dollars in healthcare expenses. Myth: More kids die from flu than die from COVID.
Fact: Since flu deaths in children became nationally reportable in 2004, reported flu deaths in children ranged from a low of 37 (during 2011-2012) to a high of 199 (during 2019-2020). During the 2020-2021 flu season, the CDC received only 1 report of a pediatric flu death in the United States. The unusually low numbers of flu deaths and cases last season were largely due to precautions put in place for COVID-19, including masking, physical distancing, reduced travel and increased handwashing. By comparison, more than 600 children nationwide have died from COVID-19, even with those precautions in place. Deaths in children are unusual for both the flu and COVID-19, but they do happen, and both are preventable with vaccine.
