Together for Mental Health! That's the theme for Mental Health Awareness Month this May. We want to bring awareness to the dedicated and compassionate work that our mental health workers do. John Bergen, Peer Support Specialist, shares some insight about his job:

How would you describe your work?
Every day is an adventure. And I have the opportunity to come alongside individuals who are going through some familiar experiences that I have lived through, or that I am still progressively overcoming. I provide many different supports, such as dignity, encouragement, empowerment, resources and ideas. I also help my peers to make connections with otjohn berganhers within our community. It is a real pleasure and honor to support these individuals from a peer relationship!

What motivates you and inspires you to “keep at it?”
Helping others helps me! One of the powers that I draw from is my “team” and my team consists of anyone who has impacted my life with a positive word or action. Many members of my team are no longer here on this Earth. But they invested in my life in many ways—through love, encouragement and wisdom. I have an amazing team here at HHSA, and my wife Deborah and family are also sources of strength. Also, I can’t forget to mention “Rusty William Watchman Bergen” and “Jimmy,” our healer dogs who inspire me to be the kind of individual that they know and love.

I stay active! I live with ADHD, PTSD from physical trauma, depression and anxiety. I have also suffered a number of traumatic brain injuries. I am a non-medicated neurodivergent who relies on a variety of wellness tools. For example, I enjoy outdoor activities such as landscaping, gardening, and getting creative with woodworking. I also spend time with my animals and koi fish. Most importantly, I draw from the combined energies of all my team members! I am one individual, but 10,000 support me!
