Shasta County Executive Officer

New Shasta County Executive Officer named

Shasta County, through its Board of Supervisors, announced the appointment of Matthew P. Pontes as County Executive Officer, effective January 27, 2020. Matt comes to our area from the County of Santa Barbara where he served as the Assistant County Executive Officer overseeing the County’s Community Services, which include; the General Services Department, Community Services Department, Public Works, Planning and Development, Agriculture Department and the Office of Emergency Management. During this time, he led efforts from conceptual design to construction of the County’s largest capital project, a 120-million-dollar new Jail facility.

Prior to becoming the Assistant County Executive Officer for Santa Barbara County, he led their County’s General Services Department as Director. The General Services team included the County’s Information Technology, Public Safety Radio Communications, Facilities maintenance, Capital Projects, Real Estate, Fleet, Purchasing, Security, and Mail services. He also served as the Director of Recovery, leading the County’s efforts related to the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow in Montecito to ensure communities were prepared for all hazards. As the Director of Recovery, Pontes led a team of emergency managers, communications professionals, consultants, Public Works, Flood Control, Public Health, Fiscal, and Planning and Development professionals who focus on recovery and resiliency efforts. He has over twenty-seven years’ experience in both Public Service and the Private sector. 

Pontes attended Allan Hancock Community College; California Polytechnic State University, earning a Forestry and Natural Resource Management Degree, with a concentration in Wildland fire and hydrology; and acquired a degree from the Municipal Forest Institute. Pontes worked for the United States Forest Service, on the Humboldt / Toiyaibe and the Sequoia National Forests fighting wildland fires and in timber management. Pontes also worked for Alpine Land Information Services, leading Archaeological Resources in Redding, Ca.

Pontes worked for the County of Kern, serving the diverse communities in many capacities that include the positions of Planner I-III and Assistant Director of the Parks and Recreation Department. During his time living in Kern County, Pontes became a Certified Arborist, and worked as an adjunct faculty member with Bakersfield College; instructing on Fire, Forestry, and Arboriculture. He has served on a High School

Agriculture Advisory Board, the Board of Directors for four Fire Safe Councils, and various Tree Boards; leading Kern County on several incidents in the role of Logistics Chief and EOC Director for Kern County’s Emergency Operations.

Matt has three children; Hailey 23, Tim 16, and Kate 14 and is married to Misty. Matt is active in the outdoors, spending most of his free time in the mountains, on beaches, lakes, and rivers and watching his children compete in events.
