Family Law Facilitator

The Family Law Facilitator's services are FREE to everyone.

The Facilitator is a lawyer who works for the Superior Courts of Shasta and Trinity Counties. Please refer to the list of County Law Facilitator's in your area (found below). The Facilitator helps people who don't have attorneys to represent themselves in family law or parentage cases involving child support, spousal support, or child custody and visitation as they relate to child support. The Facilitator cannot represent you, give you legal advice, or go with you to court, but can give you information to help you represent yourself by:

  1. Explaining court procedures, including how to file court papers and serve them on the other side;
  2. Assisting you in selecting and filling out the court forms to be filed in your case;
  3. Helping you prepare the orders and judgments made by the court;
  4. Mediating financial disputes between you and the other party concerning child support, spousal support and health insurance, and preparing support schedules based upon statutory guideline; and
  5. Providing information on general principles of family law.

The Facilitator may assist the other party in your case, if the other party requests services. You should not share confidential information with the Family Law Facilitator. The Facilitator cannot assist you with complex legal problems involving property division, pension fund division, or tax questions, or with bankruptcy or guardianship filings, even if these legal issues involve family matters.

Classes are given on these subjects:

  • Dissolution (divorce), legal separation and nullity (annulments);
  • Establishing parentage (parentage actions)
  • Orders to show cause and motions (to get or modify orders for child custody, visitation or support); and
  • Default Judgments (when the other side has not responded to the case you filed.) The default judgment class also covers the final paperwork needed to finish your family law or parentage case.

The schedule for classes and walk-in clinics is available by calling 530-245-6900 or 1-800-236-7900 (if calling from Trinity County). The schedule may change from week to week. The office is at 1500 Court Street, Room 115, in Redding, and at the Courthouse in Weaverville.
