Shasta County Public Health has birth certificates on file from 2015–present. For all other years, please contact the County Recorder’s office at (530) 225-5678.
Birth certificates are $28 each and can be purchased at our office. The application for a certified copy of a birth record can be obtained here.

Home birth registrations
All home births must be registered within one year of birth. Home birth registrations are by appointment only. To make an appointment, please call our office.
Amendments, acknowledgement of paternity, delayed registration of birth
If you need to make a change to a birth certificate, add the father to the birth certificate, or register your home birth after your baby’s first birthday, please contact our office. You can also download more information here:
Death/fetal death certificates
Shasta County Public Health has death certificates on file from 2002–present. For all other years, please contact the County Recorder’s office at (530) 225-5678.
Death certificates are $21 each, fetal death certificates are $18 each and they can be purchased at our office. The application for a certified copy of the death record is here.
Amending a death certificate
Shasta County Public Health and funeral homes can assist with amending a death certificate. Please call our office for more information.
A burial permit is required prior to disposition of human remains. Burial permits can be issued through our office or though funeral homes. The cost of a burial permit is $12. A death certificate or prior burial permit is required to purchase a burial permit. Walk-in appointments for burial permits are welcome, or call our office to schedule an appointment.

All requests for certified death certificates received by 1:30 p.m. (unless the record is pending state registration) will be issued that business day. Requests after 1:30 p.m. will be issued the following business day.

After-hours emergency filing
After-hours filing is available on weekends and holidays for the immediate filing of death certificates. The need for an “emergency” filing must be demonstrated (i.e. religious reasons, shipping out of the county, etc.).
Emergency filing after hours: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and all County holidays.
