- Mission Statement: Empower the people of Shasta County to make positive food choices and to be more physically active.
- Membership Organizations
Shasta CAN is an all-volunteer organization with members from American Cancer Society, Butte County Cooperative Extension, City of Redding Parks and Recreation, Shasta Co. Head Start, Shasta County Public Health, U.C. County Cooperative Extension, and other community members and health agencies. - Structure: Shasta CAN and its Steering Committee hold quarterly meetings at the American Cancer Society at 3290 Bechelli Lane, Redding, CA 96002. Project committees meet as needed to plan events, including National Nutrition Month Lean-N-Green Events (March); Spring into Health (April); National TV Turn-Off Week (April); Get Healthy Shasta Event (September); and 5-A-Day Month Wellness Challenge (September).
- History: Shasta CAN’s roots begin in 1997 with a group of local dietitians who met to work on projects for National Nutrition Month and soon discovered a need for a long-term coalition to promote nutrition in the community year round and to expand the focus to include physical activity. Thus, Shasta CAN was formed in 1999. Through Shasta CAN, agencies collaborate to maximize resources and avoid duplication. Coordinating key special events is at the heart of what Shasta CAN does. Shasta CAN also works to promote environments supportive of good nutrition and physical activity through advocacy and policy change.
- Funding Sources: Shasta CAN is an all- volunteer organization. We are supported by the enthusiasm and energy of our volunteers, donations from the community, and in-kind contributions from member agencies. Some specific projects are funded by participating organizations as appropriate, per their grant-funded goals and scope of work.
