Planting the Lazy Landing gardenGardening in Shasta County is a cost-effective way to encourage more fruit and vegetable consumption, therefore promoting healthier, more physically active people. In addition, gardening brings families, friends and communities together socially.

Because of the direct health benefit of community gardening, Public Health sponors community gardens throughout Shasta County as part of our ongoing effort to build a healthier community. Three Public Health-sponsored community gardens now in operation include: Lazy Landing Mobile Home Park in Redding (open to residents of the Mobile Home Park only), Mill Street Rainbow Garden in Anderson (open to all residents of the Anderson Community), and the Cedar Garden in Fall River Mills (open to the residents of Cedarwood Apartments only). For more information and to sign up for a garden plot at the Mill Street Rainbow garden, contact Dodie Maguire at 1900 Mill Street, Anderson, CA 96007 or phone 530-378-6060.

Raised beds at KirkwoodTwo additional community gardens are planned in Shasta County. One garden is at the Kirkwood Assisted Living Center/Mountain Vistas in Redding, and will be open to residents of Kirkwood and Mountain Vistas (the new senior housing complex next door). The other garden is being developed in the City of Shasta Lake at Central Valley High School. This garden is open to residents of the City of Shasta Lake. For more information and to sign up for a garden plot at the Garden in the City of Shasta Lake, contact Joyce Bianchine at Gateway Unified School District by calling 530-245-7987.

Research shows that children who garden are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables. Two Public Health-sponsored school gardens are planned at Fall River Elementary School and Shasta Lake Middle School.
