Your child can be covered for doctor visits, hospitalization, prescriptions and other benefits through the Healthy Families Program. Healthy Families is a low-cost insurance program run by the State of California for children and teens aged 18 years and younger. It provides health, dental and vision coverage to children who do not have insurance and do not qualify for free Medi-Cal.
How Does Healthy Families Work?
Children who qualify for Healthy Families get 12 months of health coverage by paying low monthly premiums, which range from $4 per child to a maximum of $27 per family. They receive services through health, dental and vision plans that work with Healthy Families. For health services, Shasta County residents can choose Blue Cross EPO or Blue Shield EPO.
The Healthy Families plan covers most visits to doctors, dentists, and other health care specialists. The plan also covers hospital care, labs, preventive services and prescriptions. There is no co-payment for preventive services such as immunizations, and a low $5 co-payment for non-preventive services such as going to the doctor because of illness.
