 HIV Antibody Testing

A simple test is available to determine if an individual is infected with (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) - the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) - a condition that impacts the immune system and eventually causes death. The test looks for antibodies, which are produced in response to HIV infection. Individuals are encouraged to find out their HIV status and protect themselves and others accordingly.

The HIV test is confidential and requires collecting a specimen:

OraQuick - a saliva sample is collected (no needles).  This rapid test gives results in 20 - 40 minutes

  • Negative result - no antibody detected; see "window period"  information
  • Positive result - antibody detected; indicates probable infection with HIV; a blood specimen will be collected and sent to the State Lab for supplemental testing.
The HIV "window period" is the time it takes for the body to produce antibodies in response to infection. This can take anywhere from 2 - 12 weeks or more. A false negative result could result if a person is still in the window period and just hasn't given their body enough time to produce antibodies. Another HIV test should be performed after the window period for accurate results.
