Shasta County Public Health serves the entire population of the County, including all unincorporated areas, Anderson, Redding, and the City of Shasta Lake. At the time of the Department's birth, Shasta County's government was 100 years old. Prior to that, the state government in Sacramento had served to protect and improve health from a distance of 160 miles. Establishing a local health department served to bring health improvement and protection for the local community, from the local community. That tradition continues today.

What started out as a fledgling Department heralding a staff of one health officer, has grown into nearly 170 staff, a dozen coalitions, several formal partnerships, a 15-member advisory board and countless individuals giving their time to protect and improve health in Shasta County. Community involvement is the key to successful public health.

Our 2004/05 operating budget was just over $12 million.  Sales tax and vehicle license fees provide approximately 45% of our revenue.  Thirty-five percent comes from grants and state/federal allocations, and 20 percent comes from fees and other local revenue.
