The Shasta County Opportunity Center is an employment training program for people with disabilities in Shasta County. These individuals perform paid work in a number of different work environments and at the same time learn the skills necessary to obtain competitive employment in the local community. People are employed in a number of different work environments including assembly and packaging, as part of a crew providing services in the community (such as janitorial, grounds keeping, and motel housekeeping), and through individual placement at local employers.
Unemployment rates for persons with disabilities is as high as seventy percent in some regions of the US despite the stable economy we are currently experiencing. As with anyone else, the people we serve enjoy the self-esteem and involvement in the greater community that results from working. They also rely less on government assistance when they are gainfully employed. The employers and customers we work with rave about the dedication, enthusiasm and loyalty of the people with disabilities with whom they work. When individuals with disabilities are employed, the entire community benefits. These individuals spend their disposable income in the local community and the overall tax burden is reduced. If you are a local business, go to Business Services to see the types of work people with disabilities can perform for you by partnering with the Opportunity Center. If you are an individual with disabilities and reside in Shasta County, see the Vocational Training page to find out how to become a part of the Opportunity Center team.
