Welfare to Work

Mission Statement

Working together to provide options and opportunities to
individuals and families in need.

Welcome to the Shasta County CalWORKs Employment Services web page. The Shasta County CalWORKs program is operated by the Department of Social Services in collaboration with many other local agencies.

CalWORKs is California's response to the national mandate for welfare reform. Shasta County CalWORKs is our community response to this mandate. The intent of CalWORKs is to help recipients of public assistance find and retain employment...and thereby reduce the number of people who receive temporary cash assistance.

The CalWORKs program provides temporary cash assistance for needy families. Parents and caretaker relatives are required to participate in welfare to work activities for 32/35 hours per week.

The program offers supportive services to clients including child care, transportation and other services necessary for a successful transition from welfare to work.

Shasta County CalWORKs offers the following services for recipients of cash aid:

  • Adult Basic Education/GED
  • Behavioral Health Services
  • Cal Learn
  • Community Service
  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Job Enrichment Development Services
  • Job Services
  • Job Skills Training
  • Orientation/Appraisal
  • Unpaid Work Experience
  • Vocational Assessment
  • Vocational Training
  • Other services as necessary for employment

As a condition of continued eligibility, recipients of cash aid must participate in work or work-related activities for a specified number of hours per week. These activities are specified in an individual "Welfare-to-Work plan" that is developed with each client. For adults, there is a cumulative 60 month lifetime limit on eligibility for cash aid.
